A Resolution Supporting Professional Traffic Stops and Discouraging "Racial Profiling".

WHEREAS, the Florida Sheriffs Association and the Florida Police Chiefs Association are committed to providing quality law enforcement services to all persons in the state, and;

WHEREAS, persons have the right under the United States and Florida Constitutions to be free of infringement of their liberties, except when pursuant to due process of law, there is reasonable suspicion or probable cause to believe they have committed an offense, and;

WHEREAS, enforcement decisions based solely on race have no acceptable or legal place in law enforcement operations, and;

WHEREAS, there is a perception in some communites within the state that enforcement decisions based on race are occurring in Florida;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED THAT, the Florida Sheriffs Association and the Florida Police Chiefs Association encourages professional traffic stops and discourages "racial profiling" and condemns any use of "racial Profiling" or other enforcement decision making based on race, and;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT, the Florida Sheriffs Association and the Florida Police Chiefs Association will join with other professional law enforcement associations to discourage "racial profiling", and provide training and other support to all law enforcement agencies to help them assure that such practices are not utilized.

PASSED AND ADOPTED THIS 12th DAY OF JANUARY 2000, by the Members of the Florida Police Chiefs Association, in St. Augustine, Florida, and by the members of the Florida Sheriffs Association this 1 st day of February, 2000.
