A resolution supporting the establishment of a higher standard of education for individuals seeking to be employed and certified as police officers in the State of Florida.

WHEREAS, the Association is committed to enhancing the quality of life and safety of the millions of people who live, work and play in the State of Florida; and

WHEREAS, the Association is committed to improving the effectiveness of law enforcement throughout the state; and

WHEREAS, the Association is aware that many law enforcement agencies throughout the state and nation have increased their educational standards and require that police officer applicants have a degree from an institute of higher learning; and

WHEREAS, the Association recognizes that there are significant differences in the performance of individuals who have completed courses of higher education.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED THAT, the Florida Police Chiefs Association endorses the minimum educational standards for persons seeking certification as police officers in the State of Florida be raised to require a two year college degree (or equivalent) by the year 2003. Further, we strongly advocate that by the year 2005, the educational standards be increased to require a four year college degree.
