A resolution supporting the establishment of a three digit number for non-emergency calls to public safety agencies.

WHEREAS, the Association is committed to enhancing the quality of life and safety of the millions of people who live work and play in the State of Florida; and

WHEREAS, it is the responsibility of the Florida Police Chiefs to inform their citizens of issues which threaten their safety and the safety of their children; and

WHEREAS, the current 911 Emergency Answering system is frequently utilized by citizens to request non-emergency services and/or information; and

WHEREAS, citizens are often unaware, unable to remember or obtain the appropriate non-emergency phone number for a public safety department; and

WHEREAS, the use of the 911 Emergency Phone System for non-emergency calls for service and/or information adversely affects the delivery of services to bonafide emergencies and therefore seriously threatens the health and safety of our citizens; and

WHEREAS, the establishment of a three digit, non-emergency phone number will facilitate citizens requests for routine services and or information.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED THAT, the Florida Police Chiefs Association strongly supports the establishment of a three digit non-emergency phone number to accommodate citizen's requests for routine services and/or information.
