    The Fort Pierce Police Department is searching for a deputy chief of police.  This is an executive level sworn position that assists the chief of police, as second in command, in the overall management and administration of the police department.

    The City of Fort Pierce is a historic and diverse community of nearly 50,000 residents that is located on the southeast coast of Florida.  The police department's annual budget is $15.5 million and it is staffed by 164 employees, including 113 sworn law enforcement officers.

    Responsibilities and Duties:  The deputy chief will be responsible for the administration of the agency's major operational components.  These responsibilities include operational management; critical incident command; budget preparation and control; policy development and implementation; managing the department's performance appraisal, awards, discipline, and labor agreement processes; representing the agency at public and governmental functions; and assuming the chief's duties when required.

    Qualifications:  Applicants must have an earned reputation of professional and ethical character.  The ideal candidate will have exceptional leadership, managerial, interpersonal, and communication skills.  The deputy chief must be well versed in the application of modern policing methodologies with a strong commitment to community collaboration and proactive problem solving.  The position requires an individual who is innovative, critical, and strategic minded.  Applicants must also be extremely competent in fiscal management, technology integration, accreditation processes, strategic planning, and general police operations.

    Experience and Education:  Candidates should have a minimum of ten years continuous employment as a full time law enforcement officer with at least three years experience in a highly responsible command level position.  Educational requirements include graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, public administration, or related field.  Additionally, candidates should be a graduate of a nationally recognized advanced law enforcement administration course (e.g. FBI National Academy, Southern Police Institute).  Applicants must possess or be qualified to receive Florida CJSTC Law Enforcement Certification.
