A message from FPCA's President, Chief Richard M. Beary:

Working to Enhance Safety in 1999

January 1, 1999

As we enter 1999, 1 want to wish each of you a healthy and prosperous New Year! 1999 will be a busy and exciting year for our Association. The inauguration of a new governor will bring a new leadership team to our state government. Governor-elect Bush has been working closely with us and other law enforcement associations during the transition. We expect Governor Bush to make public safety a priority during his administration. We look forward to working with the Governor and his staff over the next four years.

Allow me to now update you on other Association business. First, we now have a new location for our headquarters in Tallahassee. Our new office is located in close proximity to the Sheriffs Association on Highway 90. We have leased this newly constructed building for one year and have the option to purchase it next year if we decide that the building and location meet our current and future needs.

Second, I want to thank all of you who took the time to attend the Drug Enforcement Pre-Summit on December 3 in Orlando. Your input and ideas greatly enhanced our proposed plan. The Florida Drug Summit will bring law enforcement, drug treatment, and education professionals together to create an overall statewide drug strategy. This event will take place on January 22 in Tallahassee. I invite all chiefs to attend this important meeting. Specific reservation material has been sent to you by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Third, the deadline for nominations to recognize a police officer of the year is January 31. Please help us identify worthy individuals from all regions of the state. Complete details of the nomination process are available from our Web site at www. fpca. corn.

In closing, 1999 will be an exciting time in Florida history. I look forward to working with each of you to enhance the safety of our residents and visitors.
