March 1, 2003 Legislative Issues/Breakfast The Legislature is back in session and once again, we will be holding our Legislative Breakfast on March 26th on the 22nd floor of the Capital Building. This breakfast will run from 7:15 - 9:00 AM. Cingular Wireless will once again sponsor this breakfast. Our thanks to Cingular's Joe Pazzelli and Joni Bain for their continuous support of the Florida Police Chiefs Association. Please plan to attend, if possible. Last year we had a very successful breakfast with excellent attendance from our Legislators. It is another opportunity for us to discuss our Legislative Agenda personally with the Senators and Representatives who will be voting on the issues. Budget cuts are the hottest topic, especially those to the Department of Juvenile Justice. Additionally, proposed changes to the make up of the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission appear to be a step backwards toward improving the quality of law enforcement throughout the state. And the proposed changes to the statute affecting the use of forfeiture dollars would limit an agency's discretion on use of these funds. Please review the Association's 2003 Legislative Agenda, located on FPCA website at http://www.fpca.com/2003legislativepriorities.htm and track these bills on the Legislatures website. As always, it is important that we inform our Legislators of our position. We have found many times in the past that they were not aware of where we stood on issues. Every special interest group is trying to get the attention of each Legislator. The mere fact that we get so many to attend our breakfast, indicts the importance of our opinion to them. Lets face it, they do not have time to research what our position is, but when we convey it to them personally, they do listen. Whether or not you attend the breakfast, please make an effort to meet with or contact your area Legislators and share our views with them. As always, I appreciate you're your dedication, commitment and support.
