Homeland Security

On March 4, 2002, I had the privilege of attending a closed meeting chaired by Commissioner Tim Moore of F.D.L.E. at F.D.L.E. Headquarters in Orlando.

The speakers included Senator Bob Graham; Attorney General John Ashcroft; Congressman Porter Goss (U.S. House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence); Secretary General Ronald Noble, Interpol; John McLaughlin, C.I.A Lieutenant General; Michael Hayden, Director National Security; Vice Admiral Thomas Wilson, Director Defense Intelligence Agency; Director Robert Mueller, III, F.B.I.; our Bill Berger, President I.A.C.P.; and a host of notables from state, county, local, and federal law enforcement.

This meeting on terrorism focused on the United States avoiding another catastrophic occurrence such as occurred on September 11, 2001. The speakers were effective in establishing confidence that all government entities are working together and that all agencies share the same goal of dealing with the threat of terrorism.

A video is being developed for patrol personnel. A new approach to crime prevention and citizens watch groups was introduced by Sheriff Kevin Beary as part of Orange County's Homeland Security plan. Prevention of terrorism is key. The National Security Mission is to protect Americans at home and abroad.

Sheriff Beary introduced his Homeland Security Plan, which boasts "it's crime prevention taken to the extreme." The program centers on the citizens of Orange County and the tourists who visit here. Sheriff Beary hopes it will lead to tips that will help them locate and arrest terrorists. This looks like a pilot program for the entire country.

Homeland Security is communications with our neighbors, sharing information, coordination of information, education, and participation. Homeland Security is every American's responsibility.
