August 1, 2003 LAUNCHING AN EXCITING YEAR This past Summer Conference in Orlando Florida was my greatest professional experience in 33 years as a police officer. I want to personally thank my colleagues and friends all over the state for providing me and my family such a wonderful memory. Orlando Police Chief Michael McCoy and his hard-working staff are commended for their dedication and commitment to hosting a first-class conference. The conference was not only well-organized, but also fun for members and their families. I heard many of you comment on Lt. Jeff Goltz's great humor at NBA City, Lt. Jan Fawbush's accommodating spirit, and the chief's secretary Karen Bower's knack for hosting a hospitality room. Col. Danny McKnight was the real attraction during the installation banquet. Many of our members were deeply moved by his very real and personal experience in Somalia as well as impressed with his strong message on our freedoms. As he related his personal military experiences, I kept reflecting on the thousands of committed and dedicated law enforcement officers whom we serve within our respective organizations. I know you share my sentiment over the privilege we have as leaders in shaping and influencing the professional careers of so many fine young men and women. Your elected officers and committee chairpersons have an ambitious agenda for our association this year. Once we conclude our first official planning session with the Executive Committee and Board of Officers this September, I will outline our key short and long range goals. I am confident you will experience some improvements as well as innovations brought forward from some outstanding thinkers. We have organized our districts into groups of four, including three committees for each group, working as teams with designated vice presidents and secretary-treasurer. This structure will enhance membership involvement and ensure what I like to call 'continuity of leadership' over time. I have always believed what was stated during my induction remarks about the strength of our great association is our membership, new members and veterans. The key to unlocking the passage to even greater organizational strength is recognizing best practices and exploring new horizons which bring value to the membership. As we increase FPCA's value to both veteran and prospective members, our conferences will be completely booked months in advance, our committees will be staffed with enthusiastic members, Tallahassee will hear our voice, and vendors will be placed on a waiting list. Together, we can lead our association to another level. So, hold on as we launch this exciting year. Please talk with your district directors and executive board about getting involved. Step up to the plate and be a player. Let this be your personal invitation from Paul to his colleagues, we need your leadership, starting this year! This invitation includes those of you considering joining our association. It's a great network of friends and professionals who will be there for you- just a phone call away. When you decide to get more involved, Please email me at chiefpr@palmbayflorida.org. Sincerely, Paul G. Rumbley
