A message from FPCA's President, Chief Richard M. Beary:

INCARCERATE VIOLENT AND REPEAT OFFENDERS

August 1, 1998

I have just returned to my office after attending the funeral services for another murdered law enforcement officer. This is becoming a much too common occurrence in our state and across the nation.

As leaders, we cannot allow these tragedies to become commonplace and accepted by our communities. Our officers and their families deserve the support of our citizens and our government. We must continue to demand from our legislators and judges the incarceration of violent criminals and repeat offenders. Probation should not be an option for these types of criminals. We must visibly and vocally object when those criminals who choose to injure our officers do not receive serious punishment for their actions.

Our failure to take a stand may result in the eventual public acceptance that serious injury or death is just part of a cop's job. We must ensure that the public understands that while sworn to protect and serve, we will not allow our employees to become cannon fodder in the so-called war on crime.

In closing, your association remains committed to our mission of Quality Law for the Sunshine State.
