A message from FPCA's President, Chief Keith Chandler:
"Executive Committee Update"
September 1, 2000
An update on what your executive committee
has been doing the past month: 2nd Vice President Roy Arigo represented us
at the Florida League of Cities resolutions Committee meeting on August 10.
1st Vice president Lee Cote attended the Florida Sheriffs Summer Conference
on July 25, and spoke to the Sheriffs about educational standards.
In spite of Lee's eloquent presentation and the support of their
Educational Standards Committee, the Sheriffs voted to not support the
educational standards. We'll be working with them to try to change the
association's mind. Your executive committee, in our August 3 conference
call, agreed to "stay the course" on educational standards as approved by
you at our summer conference in June.
I attended the DOJ DNA Summit in Washington, DC on July 27-28, and the
Volusia County Chiefs Association meeting on August 25.
The Association presented awards to two state legislators during the past
month for their support of law enforcement. Senator Charley Bronson
( who sponsored the burglary DNA database pool amendment to state statute),
and Senator Locke Burt. I also presented Department of Juvenile Justice
Secretary Bill Bankhead a certification of appreciation for his department's
accomplishments over the past year.
The following association members were appointed to represent the interests
of the FPCA on various committees and commissions: Tallahassee PD investigator
Jan Avry and Melbourne PD Detective Sergeant Steve Thomas were appointed to
task force to study operating procedures for a statewide database on Pawn
Shop transactions: Major George Aylesworth was appointed to a astatewide
committee for the Environmental Protection Association; na dbOca Raton Chief
Andy Scott was appointed to the Florida Commission on Law Enforcement
Accreditation.
Patti and I attended the Special olympics 2000 Annunal leadership Conference
in Daytona beach on August 5th, where the Florida Police Chiefs Association,
Sheriffs Association, Highway Patrol, FDLE and Department of Corrections
were honored by being present as the Florida Law Enforcement Torch Run was
inducted into the Special Olympics Hall of Fame.
