Florida, Toronto Updates

As I write this column, I am representing the association at the annual meeting of the League of Cities in Orlando, Florida. I hope to obtain an insight into the League's legislative priorities as well as any other issues which will affect our members and the communities they serve.

I was invited to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony last week to commemorate the opening of a new facility for the Lake Mary Police Department. Chief Richard Beary was justifiably proud of the state-of-the-art building and I was impressed with the efforts made to accommodate future growth. Whether you are planning a new facility or contemplating expanding/renovating your present headquarters, I would you suggest you visit Lake Mary.

I hope that many of you will have the opportunity to attend the 108th Annual International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Conference in Toronto, Ontario, Canada next month. In recognition of the installation of Chief Bill Berger as President, we have planned some special events. On Sunday, October 28, thanks to Mr. Bruce Lewis, CEO of the Tracker Corporation, we will be the hosts of the "Florida Police Chiefs and Bill Berger Hospitality Reception" from 6:30 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. at the Casa Loma (a real castle and the number one tourist attraction in Toronto). Martin's Uniforms has graciously provided shirts for all of the attendees and Chief Berger has asked that each of the Florida Delegation wear them to our reception to identify each of you as hosts to our international guests. I would also like to invite you to our Annual Florida Delegation Breakfast sponsored by Martin's Uniforms scheduled for 7:45 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 30, at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel.

In addition to the sponsors noted above, I would like to extend my appreciation to the many local associations around the state who have contributed to this Florida effort and also recognize the co-chairmen, Chief's Stephan Dembinsky and Marshall Gage for their work on our behalf.
