September 1, 2003 Inspiring Year Lies Ahead It seems like yesterday since our Summer Conference in Orlando. There is so much we hope to accomplish in such a short period of time. I am very encouraged by the commitment and dedication of our FPCA staff as they work to serve our membership day in and day out. I am equally excited about the level of interest expressed by so many of our members as they have stepped forward to participate on committees, accept appointments to different statewide task forces and provide valuable input to help our association thrive. I am honored to announce the appointment of three police chiefs to important positions at the state level. Chief Tony Velong of Temple Terrace P.D., accepted the appointment on the Governor's Commission on Officer Heroism. This commission annually will recognize law enforcement heroism within our state. Chief Don Carey, of Melbourne P.D., accepted the newly formed Standards and Training Commission Advisory Panel on Use of Force. This panel will visit state issues and policies relating to police shootings and less lethal force. The panel will report its findings and recommendation this year to the Commission. Last, but certainly not least, Chief Peter Paulding of Gulf Breeze P.D., accepted the appointment to the Governor's Florida Citizen Corps Task Force. The corps will be very busy this year developing its vision and strategic plan to promote participation in the homeland security preparedness and response as well as other areas of public service. I will have much to share with the membership over the next few months as your board and officers solidify this year's planning agenda. I do want to give you a brief glimpse at a few initiatives that may be on the horizon. These initiatives involve a new blueprint for our partnership with the Florida League of Cities. I'll outline a few specific initiatives in next month's article. As I've mentioned, a busy strategic planning session with an ambitious agenda has been planned for your Board of Directors on Sept. 25, in Orlando. This meeting will set FPCA's direction for the next few years, which I'm sure will include several new and exciting initiatives. Please remain active and in touch with you association through you network of friends and district directors. We think this will be an exciting and great year for our membership. Semper Fidelis, PaulSincerely, Paul G. Rumbley
