I want to take this opportunity to update you on some of the happenings within our Association.

Police Officer of the Year Award Program

Second Vice President Keith Chandler of Melbourne, along with committee members Norm Chapman of Pensacola and Alberto Melis of Lauderhill, developed the protocol for selecting an officer of the year. The recipient of this award will receive a recognition plaque, a paid trip to attend our summer conference, and a cash award. Two runners-up will also be selected. These officers will also receive recognition plaques and small cash awards. Information about the nomination procedure is available on the FPCA Web site at www.fpca.com. A special "thank you" is in order for the committee members and for Tracker Corporation, who has agreed to fund this award program.

Resolutions

The Executive Committee and the Board of Directors recently approved the following resolutions:

  • 98.02.     A resolution supporting the Florida Constitutional Revision Commission's Proposition Number 12, allowing counties a local option criminal history check and waiting period in connection with the sale of firearms on property open to public access.
  • 98.03.     A resolution opposing the relaxation of laws which limit the size and weight of trucks operating on the roadways of the State of Florida.
  • 98.04.     A resolution supporting the establishment of a Higher Standard of Education for individuals seeking to be employed and certified as Police Officers in the State of Florida.
  • 98.05.     A resolution supporting the establishment of a Three-Digit Number for Non-Emergency Calls to Public Safety Agencies.
  • 98.06.     A resolution supporting an Amendment to the United States Constitution that would establish Victim Rights.
  • 98.07.     A resolution supporting an Amendment to Section 17 of Article I of the State Constitution preserving the death penalty and permitting any execution method unless prohibited by the Federal Constitution.

1999 Conference

The Volusia County Chiefs will host our Summer Conference at the Adams Mark Hotel in Daytona Beach. June 20-24, 1999.
