MODEL POLICY: Selected Agencies

In order to obtain the latest and "standard tested" policy, each of the agencies listed below provided "model policy" and was selected based upon the fact that they were dually accredited and by the size of the agency:

Boca Raton Police Department was the 18th in the state of Florida to receive National accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) in July of 1989. In 1996, the department received State accreditation. The Boca Raton Police Department is a professional organization which strives to attract, process, and hire only the most qualified personnel into its ranks. Boca Raton is a fast-paced cosmopolitan city which is located between Miami and Palm Beach. The population is approximately 69,690 within the city limits.

Model Policies:

Coral Springs Police Department- Coral Springs has a population of 111,743 residents. It is located mid-way between Palm Beach and Miami in beautiful Southeast Florida. Coral Springs has one of the lowest crime rates among Florida's twenty largest cities.

Model Policies:

Fort Pierce Police Department has 108 sworn officers and 32 civilian support personnel. The approximate population of Fort Pierce, Florida is 37,014.

Model Policies:

Gulfport Police Department Gulfport Police Department represents a population of nearly 13,000 residents in what is known as Pinellas County's earliest settlement. The agency is today recognized as a spirited yet professional organization of 32 sworn officers dedicated to the concepts of service and justice. The Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation awarded accredited status in 2000, followed by reaccreditation with CALEA recognition in 2003. The Gulfport Police Department enjoys outstanding support not only from its own diverse yet independent community, but from the greater Tampa area network of criminal justice professionals as well.

Model Policies:

Haines City Police Department was the first agency in the 10th Judicial Circuit to be nationally accredited with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement. In November of 1997, Haines City was reaccredited in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Additionally, Haines City Police Department was accredited by Florida State Accreditation in October of 1998 in Jensen Beach. The Department has worked hard to achieve and maintain these standards. There are approximately 42 sworn police officers and 13 civilian employees working for the police department. The approximate population of Haines City is 13,000.

Model Policies:

Lakeland Police Department is the largest municipal law enforcement agency in Polk County with 231 sworn police officers and 120 civilian employees. With an estimated population of 76,500, Lakeland is the principality in Polk County. Lakeland is located halfway between Key West and the Georgia state line.

Model Policies:

Largo Police Department was one of the first agencies in the United States to receive national accreditation, a distinction held by less than 2% of all police departments. This status ensures residents that local law enforcement adheres to a rigid body of professional standards encompassing all facets of the criminal justice profession. Largo is a coastal community on the peninsular section of West Florida. The current population of Largo is 70,000 people. Largo is the third largest municipality in Pinellas County.

Model Policies:

Margate Police Department achieved National accreditation at the San Francisco CALEA meeting in November of 1994 and were reaccredited in 1997. The department received State of Florida accreditation in 1997 also. The Margate Police Department is the second department in the state to achieve both National and State accreditation. Margate, Florida has a population of 50,575 people.

Model Policies::

Miramar Police Department has 157 employees. Miramar, Florida is one of the fastest growing cities in Broward County. The approximate population of Miramar is 50,058 residents.

Model Policies::

Port St. Lucie Police Department has 134 sworn police officers, 80 civilian employees, and approximately 150 citizen volunteers. Port St. Lucie is located on the Southeast Coast of Florida with 14 miles of the St. Lucie River flowing through the central area of the city. Port St. Lucie is in St. Lucie County which offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the state. The current population is 81,000 people.

Model Policies::

University of Florida Police Department became only the 14th university law enforcement agency in the country to achieve national law enforcement accreditation; the first university police department in the state of Florida to become accredited and the second largest accredited university police department in the country accomplishing both state and national accreditation. This provides an excellent indication that the University of Florida is among the leaders in the field of campus law enforcement. The University of Florida is located in Gainesville, Florida. Gainesville is located in North Central Florida with a population of 184,000 residents.
